Guam Memorial Hospital
Skilled Nursing Facility
Guam
Developing SN program
This project combines skilled nursing care for frail seniors, geriatric clinic, and University of Guam research programs at a single site - the first senior care facility on Guam. Sage principal, ValerieThiel worked closely with directors and staff from each senior care department during program development. She tracked every functional need and ensured implementation.
Code Compliance and Accreditation
- As designer/project manager, SAGE principal Valerie Thiel was responsible for code compliance and accreditation analysis to meet all U.S. accreditation requirements. created a design that references the West Pacific vernacular architecture with pitched roofs and outdoor barbeque pavilion. On an island where most modern buildings have flat roofs and look like fall-out shelters to withstand the frequent 150 mph typhoons, this design used the traditional vernacular pitched roof to de-institutionalize and honor the traditional culture.
- The shaded courtyard is designed as the center of the community where large groups of relatives and extended families gather for outdoor barbeques.
- An indoor “pedestrian street” wraps the perimeter of much of the courtyard connecting the Living Room, Dining, Activity Room, Beauty Parlor, and Therapy Wing.
- The metal roof over concrete structure was engineered for the typhoons as well as severe earthquakes.
- As project manager and designer, SAGE principal Valerie Thiel, took this $10million project from programming through construction administration with minimal change orders.
