Landmark On the Sound
Retirement Community
Des Moines, Washington
CCRC (Continuing Care Retirement Community)
Sited on 30 acres overlooking Puget Sound, Landmark on the Sound included a diverse choice of housing and service options: 175 apartments, 45 cottages, 40 assisted living units, 12 dementia units and 40 skilled nursing units. As project manager, Valerie Thiel, SAGE managing principal, worked closely with the client, coordinated design team efforts, and addressed permitting requirements.
Vibrant Social Hub
Don designed the grand main floor of the Masonic Building as the Village Social Hub, with grand formal dining room and adjacent garden room for residents to wait for friends before dining. Adjacent to the great entry lobby, an informal dining venue, the Bistro-Café, overlooked a new outdoor terrace and the spectacular view of the Sound. Adjacent to the main lobby, the historic salon with wood paneling and stained glass was preserved as a formal living room for informal socializing. Project done while at Mithun.
Village Center
Envisioned as a Village Center, the historic 1927 Masonic Building and Formal Oval Entry Court create the heart of this retirement community. As team lead designer, Don Doman, SAGE principal in charge of design, shaped the new residential wings to preserve the stunning view and to be subordinate to the majestic Masonic building.
Renovation & Preservation Expertise
Renovation of the Historic Masonic Building posed a technical and financial challenge with many required structural and envelope upgrades. In the design development phase, Valerie worked as project architect for the historic 1927 Masonic Building, working through code and technical issues posed by the archaic irregularities of the castle-like structure preserving and efficiently utilizing as much of existing structure as possible. Prospective residents responded enthusiastically to the thoughtfully renovated units that featured the unique character of the historic building.
