Skilled Nursing
Enabling residents to receive optimum services and care as they age in community, Mary’s Wood provided the 300 resident community 40 assisted living units and 23 skilled nursing units. Leading the design team, Don Doman, SAGE principal in charge of design, envisioned the AL/SN program establishing its own sense of place on the campus.
Social Connection
Don created the brightly lit AL/SN Living Room and Commons as a delightful, very residential atmosphere aimed at drawing residents out of their units for informal social connecting. Social connection with staff were also supported by Don’s design that incorporated a concierge desk/ work station and smaller scale bistro/ café station for cooking demonstrations and snacks outside dining hours.
Private Rooms
Don was responsible for the highly efficient room designs that provide good economy and functionality and have allowed all the skilled nursing and assisted living rooms to be private units. The unit designs have proved very successful and popular with residents.
Healing Gardens
The AL/SN Living Room and Commons gracefully open out onto a sunny courtyard and healing garden. Because the historic character of the historic convent grounds are so well preserved, connection with this powerfully contemplative environment is a special treasure the community offers its residents. Although the convent is now transformed and Marys Wood is a secular community, the reflective gardens suggest continued access to a spiritual world for those who now seek those healing powers.
