Utility Building Detailing
- While at KDW Architects, Valerie Thiel served as project manager and building shell designer for the Verizon Equipment and Administration Building
- Winner of 2008 Washington Masonry Awards for using masonry colors, textures, and patterns to add interest and delight to the Verizon Equipment Building.
- Louvers as well as windows have been treated as design elements to add scale to the large box structure.
- As project manager, Valerie detailed the exterior envelope and site retaining walls and coordinated the extensive mechanical system required to cool the communications and battery backup systems.
Functional Utility Structure
- The well-built and highly functional utilitarian building was detailed and coordinated by SAGE Principal Valerie Thiel.
- For security reasons, the client required a building that was of conservative design but did not call attention to it.
Expert at Coordinating Mechanical & Structural Systems
Having been project manager of several telecommunications buildings, Valerie was very familiar with the mechanical system and worked with the mechanical engineer to optimize distribution of the sizable cooling ducts.
Code Work & Permitting Expertise
With extensive expertise in project permitting, Valerie handled negotiations with the fire department to optimize the use of sprinklers in the hazardous battery room environment where water can introduce additional hazards to staff and fire-fighters.
